6 Reasons to Schedule Regular Dental Appointments

According to a survey conducted by the American Dental Association, only 52% of adults reported visiting a dentist every 6 months. Going to the dentist isn’t most people’s favorite activity, but it is extremely important to keep your oral health in check. There are a variety of things that your dentist looks for during your regular dental visits. This post covers what those things are and why it’s so important to get them checked out.

Plaque and Tartar

The most obvious thing your dentist checks for is plaque, tartar, and tooth decay. There are certain locations in the mouth that are missed by regular brushing and flossing, even by the most diligent brushers. When plaque hardens, it turns to tartar which is difficult to remove without the help of a dentist. By having regular cleanings, your dentist can remove plaque to reduce the likelihood of developing cavities.

Oral Cancer

Oral cancer is a very serious disease. If it is not diagnosed early on, it can be life threatening! Your dentist knows all of the signs and symptoms of oral cancer and can recognize abnormalities. The likelihood of catching signs of the disease early on is much more likely if you are visiting the dentist on a regular basis. This way there is a better chance of treating it successfully.

Gum Disease

This occurs when tartar buildup causes and infection where the gum is connected to the tooth. The gum tissue begins to erode and pulls away from the tooth. This can cause swelling, bleeding, mouth soreness, loose teeth, and teeth to fall out completely. Regular dental cleanings are essential to catch gum disease early on before it gets out of hand.

Bad Habits

Certain habits can have a negative impact on your oral health. Some of them include teeth grinding, nail biting, ice chewing, drinking coffee and red wine, and smoking. When you go in for your regular dental appointments, your dentist will be able to tell if any of your habits are affecting your oral health. By being informed of any destructive habits, you know what to work on for a healthier smile.

X-Rays

Not all dental problems are easily detectable by the naked eye. When you visit your dentist, he or she takes an x-ray of your mouth to see what lays underneath the surface. This can help the dentist catch issues like impacted teeth, jawbone damage, bone decay, swelling, cysts, and tumors. By detecting these issues early on, it is more likely that they can be resolved.

Abnormalities

Your dentist also checks your head, neck, and lymph nodes for any swelling, lumps, or other issues. Abnormalities can be an indication of a serious health issue that requires immediate medical care. Regularly having things checked out can help you confirm that there are no other underlying issues in your body.

Avoiding your dental appointments may not seem like an issue, but it’s important for detecting problems before they become serious. Dentists don’t only just care about your teeth. They care about your overall health and will do everything in their power to keep you healthy.
