During cold and flu season, many parents unknowingly expose their children’s oral health to hazards. Since little ones are more prone to disease than adults and get sick an average of 6-8 times each year, this can mean bad news for their smiles. Though medicine and ample sleep may help them get over a cold, you may unintentionally begin neglecting their oral hygiene. To make sure your child makes it through cold and flu season with a strong and cavity-free smile, follow these four tips to keep their mouth healthy.
Tip #1: Brush Their Teeth
Though parents may find it difficult to ensure their little one continues to brush their teeth twice per day when they’re sick, it’s important to maintain good oral health routines while they recover. It they are having trouble or refuse to go to the bathroom to do it, consider bringing them their toothbrush, toothpaste, a cup to spit in, and a cup of water to rinse with. That way, you can help them brush their teeth without them having to leave their bedroom.
Tip #2: Gargle with Salt Water
Have your child gargle with salt water once per day to help kill germs in their mouth and throat. Doing so will help them heal faster, especially if they have a sore throat.
Tip #3: Drink Plenty of Fluids
If your kid has a stuffy nose, they’re probably breathing through their mouth. This will cause it to be much drier than usual and keep them from generating enough saliva to wash away harmful oral bacteria. Having them drink plenty of water will both help them get better and allow them to generate saliva more effectively.
Tip #4: Change Their Toothbrush
Even after your little one has fully recovered, bacteria can remain on their toothbrush. Throw out their old toothbrush and replace it with a new one to keep them from becoming reinfected. If your child is particular about the toothbrush they use or you can’t run to the store to get them a new one, kill some of the germs by boiling it in hot water. Additionally, make sure you isolate their toothbrush from those of your other family members while they’re sick to keep the bacteria or illness from spreading.
With the above tips, you can help your child keep oral health issues from developing while they’re sick. They can show cold and flu season who’s boss by coming out on the other side of sickness with a smile that’s as lovely as ever!
